University of Surrey invites local musicians to campus for community orchestra day

Local musicians are being urged to take part in the University of Surrey’s community Orchestra Day on Sunday 5 March 2023.

The event, which is free for musicians and players, will take place from 11am – 6.:45pm in University Hall at the University’s Stag Hill campus

Russell Keable, who organises and conducts the event, is highly celebrated for his exciting and versatile performances with the London Mozart Players, BBC Concert Orchestra, Royal Oman Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Alongside his work teaching conducting at the University of Surrey, he is also principal conductor of the Kensington Symphony Orchestra.

Mr Keable said:

“Our Orchestra Days have become a ‘must attend’ event for many Surrey musicians. It’s a chance to rediscover their love of playing with an orchestra after a break, or for our younger players to experience the joy and camaraderie of performing with an orchestra for the first time.

“We are continually welcoming new talent and it’s a fantastic way of drawing the local community to campus, sharing our facilities, and giving something back to Guildford. Whether you’re a player or member of the audience, it’s a thoroughly enjoyable day for all.”

Players at the Orchestra Day will rehearse and perform a rendition of two Gershwin pieces, American in Paris and the Cuban Overture, and a selection from Lerner and Loewe's Broadway hit, My Fair Lady. The final performance at 5.30pm will be open to friends, family and other members of the public to attend.

It is recommended that any musicians wishing to participate have the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Grade 7 or equivalent. Anyone who would like to play in the Orchestra should email orchestra@surrey.ac.uk by Thursday 23 February 2023

For those who would like to join the audience for the final performance, please email orchestra@surrey.ac.uk. There will also be a live stream via the Department of Music and Media’s Facebook account: facebook.com/SurreyDMM/
