University of Surrey celebrates strong performance on student satisfaction in National Student Survey 2022

Improvements in teaching quality, assessments and feedback, support and services for students have helped lift the University of Surrey into the top 10 for this year’s National Student Survey – with an overall satisfaction score of 84 per cent.

This strong performance builds on the excellent graduate employment outcomes released last month, with Surrey ranked in the top 10 in the UK for graduate employability in the HESA Graduate Outcomes Survey 2022.

The University now ranks as the 9th placed university in the UK (excluding specialist providers) for student satisfaction in the Office for Students’ benchmark survey – up from 25th in 2021 and 111th in 2020.

Professor Max Lu, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey, said:

“We are delighted to see our overall satisfaction score in the National Student Survey rising again. These results follow an excellent performance in last year’s survey and clearly demonstrate the commitment of our whole community to delivering an excellent student experience. The University of Surrey has also delivered exceptional employment outcomes for our graduates, through our practice-based teaching and professional training opportunities.”

In 2021, Surrey was one of only six institutions to improve on student satisfaction. The continued significant improvement in 2022 reflects a University-wide strategic focus on delivering an excellent student experience.

Over the last year, the University has:

  • Made improvements to assessments and feedback, providing more support, guidance and clarity around assessments and more consistent developmental feedback across our programmes

  • Returned to face-to-face teaching while retaining the most popular aspects of a hybrid education. This has included using ‘captured content’, improved online presence including assessment submission, and digitally-enhanced study spaces

  • Invested in additional academic staff

  • Opened new collaborative study spaces for students, providing new places for students to work together in addition to existing library facilities

  • Been awarded University of the Year for Graduate Employment in The Times/The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022, named Best University Careers/Employability Service in the UK at the National University Employability Awards 2022, and being ranked 10th out of more than 400 UK universities and colleges for graduate employability in HESA’s Graduate Outcomes Survey.
