The annual programme, running for six weeks from the end of July to the end of August, provides students with English Language Support together with modules covering Research Ethics and Reflective Practice, Clinical Experimentation and Diagnostic Methods as well as an intensive week focusing on Informatics, Epidemiology and Statistics.

In its second year of operation, the Summer School welcomed nineteen students to the Surrey campus in 2018. The closing ceremony, attended by Professor Vince Emery (Senior Vice President Global), Professor Helen Griffiths (Dean of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences) and Professor Johnjoe McFadden (Associate Dean International, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences), as well as senior members of teaching staff, provided an opportunity to celebrate the students’ successes and reflect upon their time in the UK.

The University of Surrey has a long-standing relationship with SJTU, with particularly strong links in Biosciences and Medicine. Surrey undergraduate students studying can apply to undertake laboratory research placements at SJTU as part of their professional training year. Surrey also hosts SJTU medical students. Plans to further develop the Summer School, as well as student and staff mobility and collaborative research opportunities are currently being explored.
