R-Map is a 2024-2027 Horizon Europe project focusing on the impact of remote working arrangements on the disparities between urban and rural regions and this meeting was attended by 19 project partners based in 12 organisations across Europe.

Dr Nikolas Thomopoulos, R-Map Surrey Lead, said:

“We are glad to welcome our R-Map international project partners to Surrey Hospitality and Tourism Management (SHTM) at the Surrey Business School and be able to offer them a glimpse of our Surrey hospitality! I'm looking forward to setting the scene about the six R-Map use-cases, where Surrey features as a key rural and peri-urban area. Based on discussions with our WP4 project partners, we planned a range of co-ordinated activities in Surrey alongside Austria-Switzerland, Germany-The Netherlands, Greece, Italy and Turkey. This will help us understand the needs of remote workers across Europe, whilst alleviating the impact on the tourism and transport sectors.”

Prof Ying Zhou, the Director of the Future of Work Research Centre, met R-Map partners and provided a brief overview of Centre activities during this meeting:

“Following the establishment of our collaboration with R-Map, it was a pleasure to meet project partners and exchange views about the effectiveness of different data collection and analysis methods regarding the future of work. It is also great to see that the outputs of the R-Map Deliverable 1.4 ‘Understanding the potential socio-economic effects of remote working arrangements’, which was led by Nikolas and Tracy in 2024, provided essential foundation for the next project activities which will utilise the WP3 R-Map model. Looking forward to receiving future R-Map updates and to seeing the impact of engagement with stakeholders across Surrey and the UK through Future of Work collaborations.”
