On 16 January, the University hosted a special lunch to celebrate the arrival of inaugural recipients of the new partnership between the China Scholarship Council (CSC) and Surrey Scholarship 2022.
Surrey’s Doctoral College and International Office were delighted to welcome the talented cohort.
The University views the new partnership with CSC as an important strengthening of a successful alliance. It is pleased to work alongside other top UK universities who offer guaranteed CSC places through their prestigious partner scholarship scheme. The partnership with CSC underlines Surrey’s commitment to global education and collaboration.
The research themes of Chinese scholars reflect many of Surrey’s own research strengths. Together, the researchers will contribute to global challenges represented by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. These include: water-food-energy nexus research to ensure food security and achieving Net-Zero; decarbonisation of the energy sector; and Natural Language Generation, a growing area of research in Artificial Intelligence.
Professor Hadfield continued her comments:
“In 2021 we joined other top UK universities to offer guaranteed PhD scholarship places through the CSC partner scholarship scheme. Surrey is proud to offer up to ten PhD scholarship places each year through this prestigious partnership.”
During their welcome lunch, members of the CSC cohort reflected on their first months at Surrey.
Yucheng Li, CSC scholar in Computer Science, said:
“It is a real pleasure to do research at Surrey. The infrastructure here is up-to-date -- you will find every academic resource you need. All the colleagues are friendly and responsible; they always answer my enquiries promptly. And most importantly, the supervisor teams are amazing. My supervisor is always on my side and is always supportive of my research.”
Jiatai Wang, Environment and Sustainability CSC scholar, said:
“Studying here funded by the CSC is a very precious opportunity for me and I really appreciate it. Studying as a PhD student at Surrey is quite a different experience, as the working time is really flexible, which gives me a lot of freedom to arrange my own schedule and make me learn how to balance work and life.”.
The CSC is a non-profit institution affiliated with the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. It manages the China Scholarship Fund, which provides financial support to 25-30,000 Chinese students each year to study abroad at world-ranked institutions.
Applications for the 2023 CSC-Surrey Scholarship are now closed. Announcement of the 2024 scholarship round is expected in October 2024. Find out more on Surrey’s Studentships page.
