Surrey professor joins prestigious academy

One of the world's most influential computer scientists, Professor Yaochu Jin, has accepted an invitation to join the prestigious academic network, Academia Europaea.

Professor Jin, who is Distinguished Chair of Computational Intelligence at the University of Surrey, is one of the most cited academics of the last decade.  

Professor Jin's research focuses on the use of artificial intelligence, in particular evolutionary computation and machine learning, to solve complex problems such as control of hybrid electric cars, design of turbine engines, vaccine selection, and self-organisation of swarm robots.

Established in 1988, Academia Europaea is a global academy and non-governmental association. It comprises more than 4,500 members, featuring experts from physical sciences, technology, biological sciences, medicine and economics. Academia Europaea members include seventy-two Nobel Laureates, several of whom were elected to the Academia before receiving the prize.

Professor Yaochu Jin said: "It is a great honour to accept the invitation from Academia Europaea - an organisation overflowing with colleagues whom I admire and who have made a positive impact on society."
