Surrey extends awards and scholarships partnership with Santander

The University of Surrey will be able to offer scholarships and awards totalling £50,000 a year for the next three years to further support education, employability and entrepreneurship after signing a three-year extension to the long-standing partnership with Santander Universities UK.

The extension continues a partnership which began 15 years ago and in its first year will offer:

  • £10,000 for one student as part of the Santander Scholar’s Programme
  • awards of up to £5,000 for at least three start-ups
  • funding of £1,000 per student for to enable up to 15 students to undertake employability experiences
  • 10 awards of Brighter Futures Grants worth £1,000 to support them through university

Matt Hutnell, Director, Santander Universities UK, joined Professor Max Lu, President and Vice-Chancellor at the University of Surrey, at a special signing ceremony on Stag Hill campus on Friday 27 October.

Ahead of the signing, Student Enterprise Manager Kat Mack introduced three Enterprise Scholars who each discussed their time at Surrey and the impact that Santander funding has made on their education.

Henry Ayres (Engineering Materials (MES) PhD FT), Nduka Nduka-Eze (Electrical and Electronic Engineering MEng, 3rd Year undergraduate) and Adejoke Popoola (International Events Management) each gave a short presentation and answered questions.

Professor G Q Max Lu, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey, said:

“As the beneficiary of two scholarships myself during my own education, I have experienced their transformational power first-hand.
