Prestigious award for book
Women and Medieval Literary Culture: From the Early Middle Ages to the Fifteenth Century, which Diane Watt co-edited with Corinne Saunders of the University of Durham (CUP, 2023), has won a prestigious 2024 Choice Award for Outstanding Academic Titles. Professor Diane Watt is Professor of English Literature and Associate Head of the School of Arts, Humanities and Creative Industries, Research and Innovation.
Each December, Choice, a part of the American Library Association, releases its list of Outstanding Academic Titles. This highly regarded collection highlights the best scholarly works, both print and digital, reviewed over the past year. This distinguished list is a mark of excellence within the academic library community.
The adjudicators wrote:
'This is a particularly important addition to the field of medieval women's literary culture because it includes not only ubiquitous women like Christine de Pizan, Margery Kempe, Marie de France, and Eleanor of Aquitaine but also an array of less-known women writers and literary patrons… a treasure trove for medieval scholars, especially those focused on medieval women's literary studies… Highly recommended.'
Professor Watt said: "I am of course delighted to have been selected for the award which reflects the hard work of the contributors as well as the editors of the volume."
