Music sits within the Department of Music and Media at the University of Surrey and has continued to maintain its second place position in the 2019 rankings. Music offers students the opportunity to explore musical repertoires, past and present, through integrated studies in classical/popular musicology, composition and performance, with emphasis on cultural issues, theory and analysis, music technology and practice-based learning.

Studies take place in a thriving performance and composition environment with many opportunities to work with a wide range of professional artists and practitioners. Music achieved 100% overall satisfaction in the National Student Survey (NSS) 2017.

Professor Tony Myatt, Head of Department of Music and Media said:

“I’m delighted that the Department of Music and Media has sustained its position as one of the top ranking music departments in the UK. This recognition is especially welcome as the ranking includes our BMus (Hons) Creative Music Technology and BSc (Hons) or BMus (Hons) Music and Sound Recording (Tonmeister) courses, demonstrating high achievements across all aspects of contemporary musical study.

Students at Surrey become part of a thriving musical community of music makers, scholars, composers and performers both from within the institution and from the local music community.”

The Guardian University Guide 2019 produces annual league tables for UK universities plus separate league tables for 54 individual subjects. These rankings are compiled annually to help prospective students identify the leading universities in a particular subject. The rankings are based upon a variety of factors including academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact.
