The University has launched its latest report on social impact.

Measuring Up 2016-17 considers the impact and contribution of the University to society at a local, national and international level.

Our 2014-15 impact report, Driving Positive Change, and update for 2015-16, Measuring Up, reflected on the social, cultural and economic contribution we make to society. Measuring Up 2016-17 provides a further update and a snapshot of some of the University’s achievements in that year.

The Report reflects on the collective achievements of the University community, and how Surrey has worked with the town, local and global partners, alumni and friends to give back to society. By continuing to observe, measure and reflect on our impact, the University can strive to extend it where it is positive, and seek to modify it where it is negative.

A taste of this year’s social impact report:

  • 17,800 jobs supported across the UK by the University and Surrey Research Park
  • £1.75bn gross value added generated across the UK by the University and Surrey Research Park. This means that for every £1 the University and Research Park receive in income they give back £6.41 to the UK.
  • 48,700 people attended public events held by the University in 2016-17
  • 4,898 charity bags donated by staff and students to the British Heart Foundation
  • 13,674 students took part in Widening Participation and Outreach activities in 2016-17
