Leading fire and explosion expert receives prestigious engineering fellowship

A leading fire and explosion expert, Professor Jennifer Wen from the University of Surrey, has been elected Fellow by the Royal Academy of Engineering. The Academy's Fellowship represents the nation's best engineering researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs, business and industry leaders.

Professor Wen, who is part of Surrey's School of Mechanical Engineering Sciences and Institute for Sustainability, is highly regarded for her advanced modelling and simulations to better understand accidental incidents such as fire, explosions and releases of harmful substances.

Collaborating with industry and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Professor Wen also examined key safety issues related to the UK's efforts to reduce carbon emissions. This included work on batteries, hydrogen, and transporting carbon dioxide for storage.

I am thrilled to receive this recognition from the Royal Academy of Engineering. It is an honour that wouldn't have been possible without the hard work and dedication of my colleagues and industry partners throughout my career.

We live in a chaotic world filled with seemingly unpredictable tragic events. Our models, tools, and insights from these simulations aim to inform the development of Regulations, Codes and Standards, as well as mitigation measures to reduce the risks. I hope to continue this work for many years to come.
Jennifer Wen, Professor of Energy Resilience and Head of the Fire and Explosion Modelling Group (FMEG) at the University of Surrey
