An Interview with Forever Surrey scholar - Trifia

Trifia is a second year Nursing Studies (Registered Nurse Adult Nursing) BSc student. We caught up with her about her university experience so far, and how the Forever Surrey scholarship has made a difference.

Why did you decide to study adult nursing?

I’ve always been interested in nursing because I have a family member in the hospital a lot and wanted to get a scope of what it’s like working as a nurse behind the scenes. With my personal connection, I want to help adults and improve their quality of life.

What were some highlights from your first year at Surrey?

Throughout Semester 1 and 2, we took part in simulation role plays of different scenarios in a clinical setting. These included medicine administration, communication skills to BLS (basic life support), checking vital signs and much more. The year was packed with various challenges and fun moments. One of my favourite moments of it all was ‘Simulation Christmas Events’, where we were placed in a hospital and experienced real time situations that may occur during Christmas. That day was memorable - it was chaotic, but it gave me a good thrill and enjoyed how everyone came together.

I also signed up for a PALS mentor. The extra support from a third year adult nursing student definitely helped me see the whole experience in a new light. Having 1:1 mentoring and receiving applicable constructive feedback helped me improve my assignments significantly and I feel more confident in my writing and referencing skills as a whole. With that being said, I might consider being a PALS mentor myself; helping first year students that find their assignments hard to understand. I want to be that extra support for them.

I was given the opportunity to expand my nursing experience, by working as a healthcare assistant at the Royal Surrey.

How has your second year been so far?

It’s been interesting so far! We had a few “step up days” to introduce us to the year, and I’ve started my placement in district nursing. This has already taught me a lot of clinical skills, as I’ve been working in patient homes, care homes, GPs and clinics. I’m excited about the placements that I’ll be going on later in the year too, which could be in surgical theatres.

How has the scholarship made a difference to your time at university?

When I started at Surrey, the uncertainty of financial concerns was definitely a struggle. But when I received the scholarship, a huge burden was lifted from my shoulders. With my finances finally stable, I've been able to completely focus on my studies and my anxiety has significantly decreased. I am incredibly appreciative of the scholarship and how it has influenced the course of my education. Thank you to the alumni community who have donated so far.
