First place for hosts University of Surrey in the biggest UK student broadcast of 2024

Last Saturday night saw the fourth and most spectacular Univision yet. The inter-university singing competition in University Hall brought together a diverse style of acts from five universities all over the country. The winning performer was selected by a positional voting system with points awarded to each entrant through online audience ballot and by five jury members representing the competing universities. Our own Katie Martin was crowned eventual Univision champion 2024.

The whole evening was a sensational production, produced by students on the Film Production and Broadcast Engineering BEng degree (FBPE), in collaboration with Surrey student societies Stage Crew and Stag TV, with presenters JG and Anne from the Guildford School of Acting (GSA).

Stage Crew produced the set with hand-crafted stairs and captivating lighting designed specifically for each performance. Sound production was led by Tom Curtis, a Music and Sound Recording (Tonmeister) student and Misha Jenson led a seven-piece live band, comprised from across the Tonmeister, Music BMUs and Creative Music Technology BMus degree programmes. Every live camera shot and location filming was carefully planned and executed by FPBE students and the gallery was run very smoothly by Director Irene Munoz Lopez.

The production would not have been possible without the energy and ambition from final year students Ben Foreman, Producer and Jozef Sopoliga, Technical Director, both studying the FPBE course. Throughout the six-month event planning the students have been supported by Sam Sarjudeen, TV studio manager, Alan Haigh, DMM technical Director and Susan Pratt, Programme Director for the FPBE course.

Susan said: “Our students are putting into practice so many of the skills and engineering theory we cover on the course. The team can only produce this size of production with the collaboration of Stage Crew , Stag TV, and Tonmeister students.  This year the show offered even more with the presenters from GSA and the award-winning dancers from the Korean International Students Society (KISS).  Well done to all involved.”
