Early life equine gut microbiome paper in the top 10 most downloaded microbiology papers published by Scientific Reports in 2024.
Last year, the team lead by Dr Joy Leng and Professor Chris Proudman published the results from the Alborada Well Foal Part 1 study as a journal paper in Scientific Reports.

This paper highlighted the links between the bacterial diversity in the horses gut at one month old with health and performance in later life. It also identified an association between antibiotic use in the first month of life and racing outcomes.
This journal paper has been recognised in the top 100 downloaded papers in Scientific Reports (part of the nature portfolio) out of the 1,365 microbiology papers published in the journal in 2024. It was ranked as 9th with 8,315 downloads between August 2024, when it was published, until December 2024.
Congratulations to all the authors on the paper and the team at The University of Surrey that contributed to this work. We would like to thank the Alborada Trust who funded this work.
