Dr Simon Curtis in conversation with Michael Sheridan
On Monday 7 October Dr Simon Curtis appeared at the Guildford Book Festival in conversation with Michael Sheridan, author of a new biography of Xi Jinping entitled The Red Emperor: Xi Jinping and the New China.
Simon and Michael discussed various aspects of the life of Xi Jinping and his rise to become one of the most powerful men on the planet, as well as the outlook for Chinese foreign policy today. The event, which was well attended by local Surrey residents, was also supported by students from the Politics Society at the University of Surrey.
Simon said: “Michael Sheridan's book is a valuable insight into the unique experiences that have formed President Xi Jinping and that shape his world view. China's direction under President Xi's leadership will be a crucial factor influencing the future of so many around the world, whether in terms of the global economy, international peace and security, or in tackling transnational challenges such as climate change. This new book puts Xi Jinping's journey to the summit of Chinese power and world politics into a long term perspective.”
