Blog for Eating Disorder Awareness Week

Jenny Tan, a placement student in the lab, has written a blog for Eating Disorder Awareness Week 2025 (24th Feburary - 2nd March).

Jenny reflects on her own journey in order to shed light on the lived reality of having an eating disorder. She discusses the barriers to treatment and the discrimination she faced, emphasising the importance of this year's EDAW theme, 'Diversity'.

Everyone tells you that recovery is bumpy, but no one could have predicted the bump I encountered during my treatment. Perhaps due to lack of awareness, eating disorders still fall victim to social stereotypes – namely, that anyone with an eating disorder must be female and white. I tick one box, but (not for the first time) my skin colour let me down.

Ultimately, Jenny's blog is hopeful and optimistic about her recovery, and she has found university life to be an important milestone in her recovery journey.

I know that if I want to run, dance in Rubix and engage in my studies and survive, then I have to eat. And in the grand scheme of things, that actually feels pretty worth it.
