Barclays experts share insights on the art and science of wealth management
On 26 March 2025, students at Surrey Business School had the opportunity to attend a fascinating guest speaker session titled 'The Art and Science of Wealth Management', delivered by two distinguished professionals from Barclays Private Bank and Wealth Management: Neil Budd and Vasilis Michos, CFA.

Drawing on over 15 years of experience advising high-net-worth clients, Neil Budd spoke on the 'art' of wealth management. He shared how his work involves helping families define the meaning of their wealth, manage complex family dynamics, and navigate shifting financial environments. His unique perspective underscored the importance of tailoring long-term, flexible wealth strategies that align with clients' personal values and objectives.
Complementing this, Vasilis Michos CFA and graduate of Surrey’s MSc in International Corporate Finance, focused on the 'science' of investment management. He covered technical aspects of portfolio construction, asset class diversification, and asset allocation strategies. Vasilis also explained how investment performance is evaluated using both qualitative and quantitative methods, offering students a deeper look into the analytical tools behind private wealth advisory.
The session, organised by Dr Christos Mavrovitis, attracted a strong turnout of undergraduate and postgraduate students, particularly those aspiring to careers in investment banking, private banking, and wealth management. The Q&A session was especially lively, with students asking a wide range of questions, particularly around career development and employability. Both speakers offered insightful and practical advice on what it takes to succeed in the wealth management sector, providing tips into recruitment processes, desirable skills, and early career pathways.
This event formed part of Surrey Business School’s commitment to bridging academic theory with real-world application, giving students direct exposure to industry experts and current professional practice.
