Ambassador of Argentina visits the University of Surrey and Surrey Research Park, Guildford

His Excellency, Ambassador Figueroa, led a delegation visit to the University of Surrey on Monday 20 February 2023 where he was invited to meet Professor Max Lu, Vice-Chancellor, and discuss UK-Argentina research and technology opportunities.

The Ambassador was joined by Dr Ana Franchi, President of CONICET, Argentina’s National Scientific and Technical Research Council, led a lively discussion about Argentina’s research priorities and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Prof Lu outlining our shared commitment to research collaboration.

Professor Lu said:

“We are honoured to have hosted a visit from the Argentine Ambassador. Surrey is fortunate to have a number of research collaborations and strong relations across Argentina. Our MoU with CONICET will provide a strong foundation to develop future collaborative projects and new partnerships in the years to come.”

The delegation had an interactive demonstration of technology developed by the Surrey Institute for People-Centred Artificial Intelligence, the newly-formed pan-university AI Institute. They also met with academics from the School of Veterinary Medicine to learn about their research on sheep vaccination in Rio Negro, Argentina, and discussed Surrey’s One Health, One Medicine approach to research across the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences.

They ended the day with a trip to Surrey Research Park, the fourth largest University-owned research park in the country and a major centre of excellence in technology, science, health and engineering for businesses of all sizes. Hosted by Chief Executive Officer Grant Bourhill, they discussed how Surrey Technology Centre delivers added value through their outstanding enterprise ecosystem.
