Addressing the negative social and environmental impacts of the floriculture sector

A new ESRC impact project at the University of Surrey will address the negative social and environmental impacts of the floriculture sector 💐
The cut-flower sector generates $55 billion globally every year, but most consumers and flower sellers are unaware of significant sustainability challenges in supply chains, including high carbon and water footprints, environmental degradation and poor working conditions.

Dr Jill Timms has been awarded ESRC funding to work with an impressive list of partners, to explore solutions to the sustainability challenges presented by the floriculture sector, which is well behind others in acknowledging its contribution to the climate emergency.

As part of this project the team will deliver a sustainable floriculture knowledge exchange hub, co-create industry-supported standards for sustainable flowers, and create educational resources to inform and facilitate change for all who work with or use flowers.
