About
This PhD project will involve joining the theoretical nuclear physics group at the University of Surrey to work on one of a number of current problems of interest including: developing new reaction theories based on ab initio methods; exploring the role of nonlinearities in nuclear excitations; understanding nuclear reactions for fusion power technology; the properties of nuclei in stellar environments, and the treatment of nuclei as open quantum systems.
During the application and interviewing process, you can discuss your interests in some of these different areas.
Eligibility criteria
Open to any UK or international candidates. Up to 30% of our UKRI funded studentships can be awarded to candidates paying international rate fees. Find out more about eligibility.
The candidate should have a background in physics and mathematics and be good in computing. The work combines theoretical nuclear physics, which is based on quantum mechanics, with computational simulation. Confidence in theoretical physics, formal mathematical developments and general computational simulation and methods would be an advantage.
How to apply
Applications should be submitted via the Physics PhD programme page. In place of a research proposal, you should upload a document stating the title of the project that you wish to apply for and the name of the relevant supervisor.
