UKRI and/or University of SurreyFunding information
We are offering the UKRI standard stipend (currently £18,622 per year) with an additional bursary of £1,700 per year for full 3.5 years for exceptional candidates. In addition, a research, training and support grant of £3,000 over the project is also offered. Full home or overseas tuition fees (as applicable) will be covered.
About
From quantum foundations to cosmology, research in quantum sensing will likely lead to step change progress in many areas of modern physics. This PhD project will study how quantum resources such as entanglement and squeezing can enhance measurement techniques in curved spacetimes. This will involve, in particular, devising novel data analysis protocols for quantum detectors operating in low Earth orbit. A key question will be to quantify the impact of decoherence, finite statistics, and incompatible observables in terms of precision and reliability. This will be achieved by using quantum estimation theory, as well as advanced techniques such as Bayesian inference, information geometry, and multiparameter metrology. This is a timely, multidisciplinary project spanning both quantum and space sciences, with the potential to impact the theory and practice of how measurements are carried out in science and beyond.
Eligibility criteria
Open to both UK and international candidates.
Up to 30% of our UKRI-funded studentships can be awarded to candidates paying international rate fees. Find out more about eligibility.
You will need to meet the minimum entry requirements for our Physics PhD programme.
Candidates need to have a good understanding of undergraduate quantum mechanics (essential). Some background in statistical mechanics would also be helpful.
How to apply
Applications should be submitted via the Physics PhD programme page. In place of a research proposal, you should upload a document stating the title of the project that you wish to apply for and the name of the relevant supervisor.
