About
Enhancing impact protection at minimum weight is of value in many applications such as automotive, aerospace and defence industries. Amongst various lightweight materials developed over the years, cellular materials such as foams and honeycombs find their way in many applications especially for energy absorption. Despite their widespread use, the range of mechanical properties that conventional cellular materials can offer are mainly constrained by limitations in manufacturing.
Recent advances in additive manufacturing however, opens up a whole range of new possibilities for designing complex materials with properties unprecedented before. Multi-material 3D printing technology provides a unique opportunity not only to tailor the architecture of cellular materials but also to control the material compositions at different length scales.
In this project the aim is to design and characterise a range of novel lightweight cellular structures with the main focus on increasing energy absorption capabilities. The relationship between microstructure, material composition and macroscopic properties of these cellular materials will be explored using experimental, analytical and finite element modelling. A successful candidate should have good analytical skills as well as good background is solid mechanics. Knowledge or experience in the areas of mechanical behaviour of materials, materials characterisation, additive manufacturing and finite element analysis are desirable. If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Dr Iman Mohagheghian.
Start Date: 1st August 2018. Alternatively 1st October 2018 could also be accommodated.
Eligibility criteria
Applicants are expected to hold a first or upper-second class degree in a relevant discipline (or equivalent overseas qualification), or a lower second plus a good Masters degree (distinction normally required).
