The Biochemical Society
The Biochemical Society sets aside as much funding as possible for its annual Summer Vacation Studentships and makes every effort to increase its funding each year, providing many undergraduate students with the valuable experience of laboratory research.
Genetics Society Genes and Development - Summer Studentships
Genetics Society Genes and Development Summer Studentships are offered to undergraduate students in any area of genetics, to gain research experience by carrying out a research project in the long vacation, usually prior to their final year. Studentships will only be awarded to students who have yet to complete their first degree (i.e. those who will still be undergraduates during the long vacation when they do the studentship).
Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) - Student Scholarships
Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) Student Scholarships are various awards available to students studying at universities or colleges in the British Isles or an overseas institution at which there is a UFAW University Links representative. Students will usually be undertaking courses in the agricultural, biological, psychological, veterinary or zoological sciences.
The Gatsby Charitable Foundation - Sainsbury Undergraduate Studentships
Gatsby Charitable Foundation Sainsbury Undergraduate Studentships are awarded to support undergraduate summer projects in plant science. They are open to students in their second year (or in their third year, if on a four-year course). Seven studentships are offered each year.
Society for Endocrinology - Summer Studentships
Society for Endocrinology Summer Studentships help undergraduate students gain research experience by working in a research environment. A stipend is offered for up to 10 weeks of study, together with a sum for the host department consumables (costs towards lab work).
The Pathological Society
The Pathological Society provides funding to support research projects in pathology, to cover conference travel costs or for students to gain experience in diagnostic departments during elective/vacation periods. They also provide an annual grant for medical students completing an intercalated degree (either BSc or MRes/MSc), which includes up to £9,000 towards tuition fees, £4,500 for consumables and a £1,500 stipend.
Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS)
The Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS) provides grants for medical students looking to undertake an intercalated bachelor of a science degree related to surgery. They also offer prizes for clinical students undertaking an elective in surgery in a developing country.
Experimental Psychology Society (EPS) – Undergraduate Research Bursary
The Experimental Psychology Society (EPS) Undergraduate Research Bursary scheme will finance five bursaries to support undergraduate students in the summer vacation prior to their final year.
British Society for Plant Pathology - Undergraduate Vacation Bursary
The British Society for Plant Pathology Undergraduate Vacation Bursary provides undergraduate students who are considering a research career with some practical experience in a plant pathology laboratory and to assist supervisors to meet some specific research objectives. Bursaries will be for six, eight or 10 weeks.
British Pharmacological Society - Vacation Studentships
British Pharmacological Society Vacation Studentships are aimed at either school leavers entering a biomedical science degree or undergraduates studying biomedical science. Funding will be provided to help support students while they undertake a research project in a host laboratory.
British Phycological Society - Summer Research Projects
British Phycological Society Summer Research Projects are undergraduate summer research projects last for six to eight weeks and the emphasis is on providing a research experience and training for the student.
British Society for Neuroendocrinology - Undergraduate Student Laboratory Experience Grant
The British Society for Neuroendocrinology - Undergraduate Student Laboratory Experience Grant provides some financial support for a student who undertakes a vacation lab project.
British Society for Cell Biology – Summer Studentships
British Society for Cell Biology Summer Studentships are offered to high-calibre undergraduate students who wish to gain research experience in cell biology during their summer vacation. Applications must be made by the prospective supervisor on behalf of a named student.
The British Division of the International Academy of Pathology
The British Division of the International Academy of Pathology (BDIAP) provides elective grants for medical students studying pathology in a laboratory during their elective period.
John Speak trust
John Speak trust awards of £500 are open to natural-born British citizens over the age of 18 who have a basic knowledge of a foreign language (GCSE minimum) and would like to study or work abroad to gain a deeper understanding and knowledge of that language and culture to enhance their career prospects.
Rank: Undergraduate vacation grant (Nutrition)
The Rank: Undergraduate vacation grant gives students the chance to get hands-on research experience during the summer vacation before their final year, in the fields of nutrition and crop science. It encourages supervisors to get students directly involved in the day-to-day activities of their research group or lab. The value of the grant is £400 per week per student together with up to £500 in total for consumables and covers up to eight weeks.
