English Language Support Programme

What is the English Language Support Programme?

The English Language Support Programme (ELSP) provides support in all aspects of academic English at no additional charge. ELSP is open to all Surrey students registered on undergraduate or postgraduate degree programmes. It is particularly valuable to students who speak English as a second or additional language, but native speakers are also welcome. The purpose of ELSP is to provide the tailored English language support you need during your time at Surrey. There is no compulsory homework and there are no assessments. All students who enrol in writing classes are entitled to one-to-one tutorials with our expert tutors in English for academic purposes. At the end of each course you can download an attendance certificate.

ELSP courses to suit your needs

In addition to the essential and supplementary skills courses listed here, we work with many Schools and Departments to offer ELSP courses to support you in your own subject area, e.g. Management, Economics, Engineering and Computing. Please note that if you are already confident in your academic English skills, but would like to develop them still further for additional undergraduate credits, then the ‘Advanced English’ class may be taken as a Global Graduate Award.

Establishing your needs and registration

At the beginning of your course, normally during Welcome Week, we will invite you to take some diagnostic tests to help us identify the courses which you are most likely to benefit from. Courses last from 4 to 9 weeks, and mainly consist of one 50-minute lesson per week, although some courses are for 2 hours per week. Courses run in both semesters and you may enrol in a maximum of 3 courses per semester. Enrolment is online.
