Surrey Excellence in Teaching framework
The Surrey Excellence in Teaching (SET) framework provides two pathways for teaching and academic-related staff to progress to Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).
Fellowship
The SET framework is accredited by the HEA and leads to HEA Fellowships based on the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF).
Benefits
The SET framework is free of charge for contracted staff.
Assessment for both pathways is through the compiling of an eportfolio.
Engaging with SET allows individuals to:
- Identify development needs and find ways to fulfil these through approved programmes and workshops
- Network with peers and share best practice
- Adopt a scholarly approach to teaching, learning and assessment
- Receive national professional recognition for individual contribution to teaching and learning
- Demonstrate commitment to professionalism
Pathways
There are two routes to fellowship:
- Surrey Open Pathway
- Open Pathway.
The Surrey Pathway is intended for new staff and those who are in the early stages of their teaching career. It is also available to postgraduate research students involved in teaching, technicians, library advisers and other learning support staff.
The Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching programme is essential for all those following the Surrey Pathway. HEA Fellowship is awarded automatically on the completion of specific modules. Staff can then progress to the MA in Higher Education. Those enrolled on the MA programme can choose to graduate with a postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma or an MA in Higher Education. The qualification awarded is dependent on how much of the programme has been completed.
The Surrey Open Pathway offers an alternative route to professional recognition and Fellowship of the HEA (Associate Fellow / Fellow/Senior Fellow) for Higher Education professionals. It is a flexible, practice-based route which aims to contribute to the development of theoretically informed understandings and promote reflective practice while respecting disciplinary backgrounds.
Candidates taking this route will gather evidence of their professional development with the help of a peer mentor. They will then produce an eportfolio to demonstrate their ongoing commitment to professional development. All mentors are Senior Fellows of the HEA and trained in mentoring. Additional support is available through workshops, writing retreats and resources available in Surrey Learn.
