A ten-part course presented by The University of Surrey, Centre for Translation Studies.
Cut through the hype and counter the pessimism. Develop a fresh perspective on the use of AI in translation, and learn strategies to manage its impact on translation business models.
Following their recent AI webinars, The University of Surrey, Centre for Translation Studies is now offering this in-depth course, addressing the key themes that translators need to understand to make AI a powerful tool in their work.
It aims to provide answers to common questions about AI in translation, empower translators to find their own answers to questions, and enable you to use AI proficiently and effectively.
Learning and teaching methods
At the end of each session there will be a short quiz to help you assess your understanding, plus suggested reading materials, to complement the session and deepen your knowledge.
Assessment
There will also be a post-course assignment based on a translation task involving AI tools. This is designed to help you analyse the usefulness of AI translation tools and to reflect on how your view of AI in translation alters over the duration of the course. The assignment will be marked by the tutors and individual feedback provided.
Learning outcomes
By completing the course, you will be able to:
- Understand the main concepts related to AI, Large Language Models (LLMs) and Neural Machine Translation
- Recognise different applications and uses of AI tools in translation
- Identify processes that reduce the risk of using language AI
- Acknowledge the role that creativity plays in AI and translation
- Understand the impact of AI on translation business models
- Develop strategies to manage the impact of AI on translation business models, reducing risk and promoting value for clients
- Develop a fresh perspective on the use of AI in translation.

Please note that registration and payment of fees for the course starting on 7 February is managed by the ITI.
These fees cover attendance of 10 live sessions in an online environment in Microsoft Teams, each session including the analysis of the most updated information and relevant uses cases related to Translation and AI, practical exercises with AI tools, and discussions involving attending participants. Participants have access to the recordings of all sessions for catch-up or review, during the course and for a short period after the course ends. Participants can also use channels and chats within Microsoft Teams to; raise questions and discuss them both with instructors and with other participants, find suggestions for further reading, answer progression-checking quizzes, and ultimately help raise a community of professionals that are engaged in getting ready for a future in which Translation fully incorporates the use of AI. The CTS team provides clear guidance and full support to help all users make the most of the tools provided by Microsoft Teams and the technological tools used in the course.
All registered participants receive a course attendance CPD certificate at the end of the course, and those that complete the final suggested assessment receive a course completion certificate. These certificates are added to your ITI CPD log.
