University of Surrey achieves Platinum Healthy Campus certification

The University has been recognised for its commitment to wellbeing by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Surrey is one of only 23 universities in the world to gain its Platinum Healthy Campus certification.

The Healthy Campus programme aims to enhance all aspects of wellbeing for students, staff, and any campus visitor.

Whilst coordinated by the Student Sport Team at Surrey Sports Park, colleagues across the university contributed to the award success. Evidence was provided for successful interventions and management covering campus management, mental and social health, nutrition, disease prevention, risk behaviour, and sustainability.

Nine of our project submissions were also selected as best practice and will feature in FISU’s annual best practice report:

  • Mission and values
  • Facility accessibility
  • Security of facilities
  • Physical activity programme depth
  • Promotion of sport with alumni
  • Communication of staff mental health support
  • Identification of barriers and opportunities for health provisions
  • Student support during exam periods
  • Prevention programmes for alcohol, drugs, smoking, and doping

Chief Operating Officer Andy Chalklin said: “Surrey Sports Park offers world-class facilities and this recognition also demonstrates that we are committed to improving student health and wellbeing on campus, not just through our sports offering, but with a holistic view of nutrition, fitness and mental health. To be one of only 23 Universities globally to be awarded Platinum level certification shows that we are leading the way in this field.”

A cross-university working group has been created to continue to drive the Healthy Campus approach.
